Failure effect severity
The value for Severity (S) is used to assess the severity of the failure effect in the FMEA.It should be noted that every conceivable failure effect must be allocated a separate S value. The effects for the relevant customer perspectives should also be developed with a separate structure. Typical customer perspectives include:
1. The client: The supplier’s company – typical effect: Additional work in development, rejects in manufacturing;
2. The client: “system integrator and assembly plant” – typical effects: Rejection in incoming goods or complaint from assembly
3. The client: “system users" – typical effects: Breakdowns, limited functionalities combined with field failures
4. The client: “society” – typical effects: Nonobservance of normative, official, or legal specifications
